Fundraiser Auction Huge Success!

Scott McDonald, a Te Puke teen, recently fractured his vertebra while riding his motorbike on a local track and is now paralysed from the waist down, he is currently being cared for in the Otara Spinal Unit, Auckland. Mary is one of many in Scott’s community who has stepped up to help the McDonald family with the ongoing medical costs they face.   “When I heard about the accident I knew there must be something I could do to help; and Scott is just so deserving – he’s got the best attitude I’ve seen” said Mary who first met Scott earlier in the year on a motorcross camp where she was coaching.  Mary Perkins, a Guinness World Record holder, says she is passionate about young people and is only too happy to be able to help those who need it. Mary’s signed Fox shirt from her bungy jump reached an incredible $260. All the items donated were an approximate value of $2000 and the auction raised $2854 thanks to the local community to their generosity throughout the evening. Mary’s comment after the auction “It was a huge success and the biggest thanks would have to go to my sponsors and the local business for the items they gifted to us, without them it would not have been possible”. Mary’s next project is another teen winter motocross camp and training days. She is also working on ‘Girls Learn to Ride’ days for females that might be interested in the sport and this will give them an opportunity to give it a go.

Leap Day Bungee Jump!

I survived another bungy jump on a bike today and it was just as exhilarating as the other times!! A huge thanks to Wayne and Paul at KTM for giving me a sparkling new KTM65SX to ride off the platform and fall a long way before bouncing back up and thankfully the crew at AJ Hacket bridge bungy knew what they were doing and we were both safe. Residing in Papamoa on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Perkins was first introduced to a motorbike at the age of 14, to ride around her families farm.  Taking an immediate liking to two wheels, Perkins got into motocross and later moved onto freestyle, which is where her passion lies today.

Perkins biggest achievements in freestyle motocross includes being the first female to complete an AJ Hackett bungy off Auckland's Harbour Bridge aboard a motorbike, holding the guiness world record for the largest jump by a female rider and the world’s only female rider to participate in the Crusty Demons freestyle motocross shows.

Commenting on her new ride with KTM, Mary Perkins said, “My signing with Motorex KTM Freestyle Team came about because I wanted a fresh approach to my freestyle riding with reliable bikes and a team that shared the same vision and passion that I do for developing the sport.

“I’ve been lucky enough to train with Australian freestyle rider Matt Schubring, who also rides for Motorex KTM Freestyle, and to now be his team mate across the Tasman is going to be awesome.

“Schuie has been one of the most influential riders in my freestyle career, he has helped me out with technique and tips for riding and doesn’t mind sharing his trade secrets that make him one of the best riders in the world.

“Looking ahead at my future with Motorex KTM Freestyle Team, my aim is to take them on my journey to become the first female to complete a back flip on a 250cc bike and to break my own world record of completing the largest motorbike jump by a female, which is currently 159.4 feet.”

Perkins bike of choice with Motorex KTM Freestyle will be the KTM 250 SX-F.  Her first events will be entertainment style shows throughout New Zealand.  Stay tuned on Mary Perkins achievements and appearances at www.ktm.co.nz
